Ribbon Ridge, Newberg, Oregon

Named for a boat. Made like a workshop.

Piper Underbrink farms and makes wine with a geologist’s eye, choosing the method vineyard by vineyard: destemmed or whole cluster, oak, steel or clay amphora.

The Sea Lyon

Every summer on a Minnesota lake, Piper watched her father restore classic wooden boats by hand. One of them was called The Sea Lyon.

The name came with her to Oregon. So did the habit of looking closely, taking a thing apart, and putting it back together better than it was.

Piper’s story

In the dirt, on the tractor, in the cellar.

We are farmers before we are winemakers. Sealionne learns the old ways first, then asks one question of every new idea: does it bring the vineyard to the glass more clearly?

  1. Pinot Noir vines on the slope at West Wind

    The dirt

Piper trained as a geologist. She reads every block from the soil up, and on the Geology Walk she shows you how.

  2. Harvested grapes tipped from a bucket into a bin

    Every vine

West Wind is farmed organically. We work alongside our farming crew and are in the rows all season, with our hands on every vine from pruning to harvest.

  3. The crew tasting around a table, seen in a mirror

    The old ways

Côte-Rôtie co-ferments, traditional-method sparkling, French oak. We learn a tradition properly before we change anything.

  4. Two Phoque rosé bottles in afternoon sun

    The new ones

Clay amphora, skin contact, whole cluster, Viognier skins in a Syrah ferment. Each one earns its place in the cellar or it goes.

Names, not grapes.

Each wine is named for a feeling, a place or a story, and made in small lots: 650 cases at most.

Every vintage and tasting note

The workshop in the field.

Airstream tastings on weekends and the Geology Walk with Piper on Ribbon Ridge.

West Wind is where it starts, in the soil, before anything becomes a bottle.

French for seal. Say it out loud.

Phoque is our everyday estate wines: a chill-able red, a white Pinot Noir and an amphora rosé.
